Help needed to find MARIANO: Know anyone Fukienese?
Posted By: cqk1010@comcast.net (03-17-2007)
And who is MARIANO? Well, as you should all know by now, he is our common ancestor, father of Vicente and Filomena and a Margarita (whom no one knows).

Cousin Chuchi has been working on tracing Mariano's roots in China.
She has information on how to look for Chinese ancestors based on the # of strokes of the chinese character of their family name. We are not really 100% sure what QUE SUM BING should be written or pronounced. But assuming Mariano comes from Fukien (since a lot of Chinese who emigrated to the Philippines are from there), we can conclude:

My sister Agnes says:

The correct version is Guo. Please disregard the other version which was just a phonetic transcription of the name. But there are thousands and thousands of Guos. We should talk to someone who knows Fukienese and ask what Sum Bing might be in Chinese characters. We would then know what it would be in Mandarin. Guo has 8 strokes. You will not find anything under Que because that is simply the Fujian pronunciation of Guo.

SO, PLEASE LET ME OR CHUCHI KNOW IF YOU HAVE A FUKIENESE FRIEND WHO CAN HELP US WITH THE CHINESE CHARACTERS SUM BING......

Thanks!

de los Reyes Relatives

A long time ago in my primary years my father Vivencio Q of Alejandro line introduced me to a de los Reyes family. He claimed they are our pariente from his grandmother's side of the family. The eldest daughter Jocelyn eventually became my friend and the eldest son my brother Vivencio Jr.'s friend.I lost touch with Jocelyn (retired school principal) but my brother is still very friendly with them. They originally come from Banga, Aklan but now lives in Bilao,Capiz Maninang's neighbouring Barrio.Next time I go back to Maninang (I was in Maninang in Feb. for my father's 25th anniversary) I'll make sure my brother can make arrangement and see if i can make contact with them. They might be able to give us some information regarding our extended family.

BACKGROUND

As most of us Qs know (by now!), Vicente's first wife was Dolores de los Reyes. We have not looked into HER side of the family. Tito Nonoy of Dover, NH from the II-4 Gaudencio Line (and whom I recently met), reminded me of HER side -- saying he has met de los Rs in California and that the de los Rs are from Aklan.

I. de los Reyes sibs of Dolores (if any) would be aunts/uncles of the II generation Qs
II. children of the sibs would be 1st cousins and so on.....

so for Lolo Honorato and his sibs, the de los Reyes side of his mother Dolores would be parallel to the Filomena Sr side of his father (who was Vicente's sister)

DATA

Chuchi found the information below during her internet search. Vising reminded me that our list of Unaccounted Qs (that is, Qs not found in our family trees but listed elsewhere) includes:

California Death Index 1900-1997

Marievic de los Reyes Quisumbing-Samaroo
29 Nov 1954 (Phil) - 29 Oct 1982 (San Mateo)

I do not think we have seen her name in any of the Q generational information. What is interesting is that she is ALSO a de los Reyes Quisumbing--ala Lolos Alejandro, Honorato, Paulino, Gaudencio, Melanio and Lola Flora. BUT since Marievic was born in 1954, she cannot be of the II generation! Her mother was a de los R descendant who married a Q relative??!! assuming all de los Rs are related to the Qs. Interesting.

REQUEST

Email me if you can shed light on this individual and on the de los Reyes-es who were related to Dolores.
I will add the names of other Unaccounted Qs by mid-March. I hope you have read about the RAMIREZ LINE.

END OF NOTE

2008 Feb 18 & 21 QUISUMBING-ESCANDOR FILM FESTIVAL FOR HEALTH‏
Posted By: cqk1010@comcast.net (10-25-2007)
Qs, I need your HELP! Please ask your "older" relatives--especially of the IVth generation--if they remember RETY QUISUMBING (his name was also Honorato), the eldest of four children of III-05 EDUARDO ARGUELLES QUISUMBING (the botanist, philippine orchidist) and BASILISA LIM.

Feel free to write me directly at CQK1010@comcast.net for any update. OR, if they can do so directly to contact the organizer:
Ambrosio Jumangit III <bidzbj@yahoo.com>
09272003243
09222535937

Ambrosio (BJ) below found us Qs through our website this summer. He was even able to provide me with a photo of Tito Rety though he was hoping to receive some from the relatives (no luck yet). BJ gave me an account of how Tito Rety died--written and more detailed than what we were told by Pop and Mom.

A Film Festival for Health is being launched on Feb 18 (gala night) and Feb 21 (awarding night) in 2008.
The organizers want to make sure it is okay to use the Q name and they can also get info on Tito Rety for his biography.

I have contacted two members of the direct relatives of Tito Rety and am waiting to hear from them. I have also asked others in the II-02 Honorato Line to contact second-degree cousins of Tito Rety. I want to make sure we can support this effort--for two reasons: it honors the bravery of Tito Rety and it also focuses on health advocacy.

Other requests include: attendance at the festival (I need to clarify how many can attend) as well as sponsorship (though the festival does not rely on Q financial support to push through. It is just an open invitation to provide should Qs want to help). It would be great if some Qs could be there.

All for now. If you need copies of earlier emails, let me know and I can send to you directly.
Thanks so much!
Cora

Proud to be Q, as many say!

A Quisumbing in Dayton, Ohio
Posted By: aquisumb@hotmail.com (10-31-2007)
I thought I’d share with you this nice Q-moment today. This happened at work. As I gathered all the attorneys for a conference, one them introduced himself to me and said, "Mr Quisumbing, we may be related." This lawyer’s name is Randall V. Griffin. He’s the Chief Regulatory Counsel for Dayton Power & Light Company. Mentally I rolled my eyes as if to say, "yeah, right! His last name obviously indicates he’s Caucasian. Relative? Hmm,no way. Not only that, my boxed mind still gut-referred me to the usual stereotype image of a Pinoy - short, brown, just like me. "I’m married to a Quisumbing," he proudly said. He’s married to Gianina Quisumbing, daughter of Norberto, Sr (the lawyer). I noticed he mentioned our family name with an obvious hint of pride and dignity. I knew then he was a relative. And so I was just as excited as he was, given the short time, to dissect and to connect my relationship with his wife, Gianina. I had a pretty good idea of a very close linkage between Gianina and me. Her great grandfather, Alejandro, was also my grandfather. Plus, Manang Yoli Javellana (Gianina's aunt) and Manong Luis just have a soft spot in my heart. (for Randall’s info: my name is Alejandro. Andy is just my nickname). During break I tried again to retrieve the Q-website but unfortunately it wasn’t there (as you said Ted in Dumaguete City might still be fixing it). I needed to get more names of Gianina’s siblings just for my reference. And to happily show the Q-Website to Randall. That’s why I decided to call you. Thanks so much for sharing some more info. After the conference, Randall met me at my office and we had a longer talk this time. He took the scribbled note that I did. It’s just nice to know there’s another Quisumbing in Ohio, specifically in Dayton. I’m sure I’ll be meeting Randall again so many times in the future at my work place. Especially during his case Trial which I just set for August, 2008. And I’m sure I would also have a chance to meet Gianina in person just in case I’d be in Dayton. It’s just a nice Q-feeling. I thought I really felt very good and I’d like to share this with you - You being the Q-Family Tree Manager. And to Ted in Dumaguete City, too, and Vising.

One thought came to my mind though. Quisumbing is now becoming Global. The tribe has increased and we’re pretty sure in the near future all the continents have a few of them and then voila... a lot of Quisumbings all over the world.
Right now, the world is slowly, very slowly and... gradually being embellished by Quisumbings. Someday, there will be a Brazilian Quisumbing, an Antarctic Quisumbing, a Moroccan Quisumbing, etc. at just anywhere.
And it would just be great to meet any one of them and their families.
And so...MABUHAY Qs!

Proud to be a Q.
Andy Quisumbing
